Greece (Partner 6)

The Region of Crete has an extensive experience in environmental issues such as civil protection; monitoring the environmental impact of rural and urban development; coastal zone management, management of NATURA areas etc. Through its involvement in EU funded projects, it has developed strengths and competences in specific sectors related to REGIOCLIMA, such as energy ('FEEDU' project, 'Enercy-Regio' project, 'El Hierro - towards a 100% renewable energy supply' project funded under FP5, 'Young Energy People project' funded under IEE, as well as 'COMPARES' project funded under the Interreg IIIC East-“Enercy’regio” Programme), shipping (WERMED project funded under the Interreg IIIB MEDOCC Programme), water management ('MEDIS' project aiming at defining recommendations for equitable and sustainable water management on Mediterranean islands).

These strengths and competences provide the Region of Crete with the capacity to contribute positively to the project. The Partner will enhance its understanding of the climate change and the subsequent risks, and will facilitate concrete actions towards dealing with the problem of a changing environment.

Past interregional cooperation and structural funds experience of the partner includes projects such as:

  • MEDRISK: proposed action for future extension of the management systems of the various disasters and risks such as earthquakes, floods, forestall fires, air pollution etc.
  • CRINNO-EMERIC: Development of an expert system for the Monitoring, Management, and Protection of the natural landscape and environmental resources of the Island of Crete.
  • Energy'regio: Action Programme for Strengthening the Energy Efficiency and Source Saving by Sustainable Local Development in European Regions.
  • FEEDU: Force for Energy by children through education
